What is Meningococcal Disease? What Causes It?

Meningococcal disease is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. The frightening aspect of this disease is its rapid progression within 24 hours, potentially leading to severe complications such as meningitis, sepsis, and even death if not treated promptly.

How Meningococcal Disease Spreads

This bacterium spreads easily from person to person through the following main routes:

  • Respiratory tract and bodily fluids: Transmitted through nasal mucus and saliva during close contact, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Sharing personal items: Such as sharing eating utensils or drinking glasses.
  • Carriers: Some infected individuals may not show any symptoms but can still spread the infection through close contact.
Symptoms to Watch for in Meningococcal Disease

Because this disease is severe and spreads rapidly, parents and the general public should closely observe for the following unusual symptoms:

  • Sudden high fever and chills.
  • Severe headache and stiff neck. (Inability to bend the neck to chest)
  • Nausea, vomiting, and lethargy.
  • Characteristic features: Dark red rashes resembling bruises or petechiae (small red spots) on the body.
  • In severe cases, seizures or rapid loss of consciousness may occur.

Medical precautions: If the infection enters the bloodstream, it can cause shock, abnormal blood clotting, tissue necrosis, or rapid death. Immediate medical attention is necessary.

Who is at risk and should be vaccinated?

While everyone is susceptible to infection, the following groups are at higher risk and are recommended to receive vaccination:

  1. Adolescents and adults: Especially those up to 50 years of age.
  2. Those in crowded environments: Such as students living in dormitories or military recruits in camps.
  3. Those traveling abroad: Those traveling for tourism or study to countries with regulations or a high risk of outbreaks.
List of countries where meningococcal vaccination is recommended or required:

Educational institutions and immigration authorities in many countries. Vaccination requirements before entering a country are as follows:

  • Americas/Europe: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Liechtenstein
  • Oceania: Australia, New Zealand
  • Asia/Middle East: Taiwan, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates, Cyprus
  • South America: Brazil (including other countries as per the specific requirements of each educational institution and country)
Prevention and Vaccination against Meningococcal Meningitis

We can reduce the risk of infection and transmission of the disease by:

  1. Avoiding close contact with the nasal mucus or saliva of infected individuals.
  2. Reducing unnecessary travel or being in crowded places.
  3. Vaccination: Currently, there are two main types of meningococcal vaccines based on the strain of the bacteria:

Type 1: Meningococcal B (protects against strain B), which is one of the most common and severe strains. Vaccination can begin from 2 months of age onwards (currently spreading).

Type 2: Meningococcal A, C, W, Y (protects against 4 strains) can be administered starting from 12 months of age onwards.

For those traveling to high-risk countries, it is recommended to plan for complete vaccination in advance of travel to allow the body to build effective immunity.
