Understanding Allergies — A Simple Overview

Allergies are caused by an overactive immune response to substances that are usually harmless. They can affect different parts of the body with various symptoms:

🫁 Respiratory System

  • Sneezing, nasal congestion, clear mucus

  • Chronic cough, snoring, difficulty breathing

  • Asthma: Coughing or shortness of breath, especially when exercising, laughing, or exposed to cold air

🧴 Skin

  • Eczema: Dry, itchy, red patches — often on cheeks, arms, legs, and joints; common in children

  • Hives (Urticaria): Red, raised, itchy welts that move around; may be accompanied by swollen lips or eyes

  • Common triggers include food, medications, insect bites, chemicals, or even unknown causes

🍽️ Digestive System

  • Allergic reactions to foods like cow’s milk, seafood, or eggs

  • Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, or blood-streaked stool

  • Important to distinguish from infections or other causes

⚠️ Severe Allergic Reactions (Anaphylaxis)

  • Rash, hives, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure

  • This is a medical emergency and requires immediate care

🛡 Know Your Triggers – Treat Allergies at the Root

Allergy testing, including blood tests and skin prick tests, helps identify what you’re allergic to — so you can avoid triggers effectively.
With personalized care from allergy specialists, treatment may include medications, allergy shots (immunotherapy), or lifestyle adjustments.
